Pouring Water

What the activity builds

Control a continuous motion and manage force, with a control of error your child can read on their own: spilled water is easy to see, and easy to wipe up.

The materials

  • Two small pitchers, thick glass or ceramic, sized to their hand
  • A rimmed tray to catch any overflow
  • A small sponge set on the tray, within reach
  • Water at the bottom, tinted with a drop of food coloring so it's easy to see

How to do it, step by step

  1. Set the tray in front of your child, the full pitcher on the left if they are right-handed.
  2. Without talking, pick up the pitcher with both hands, bring it to the rim of the other, and pour slowly until it's empty.
  3. Set the pitcher down, pick up the sponge, wipe the drop that landed on the tray, then set the sponge back down.
  4. Gently push the tray toward them, without a word.
  5. Let them pour, spill, sponge it up, and pour the other way, as many times as they want.

The parent's role

Show once, then step back. The control of error lives in the tray: a spilled drop is visible, and the sponge is right there to catch it. You have nothing to correct. Show the motion in silence, then watch without stepping in. Wiping it up themselves is what teaches them to pour more accurately.

Safety

Thick glass only, never thin glass that shatters. Stay close, and wipe up wet, slippery floor spots right away. No hot water, just room temperature.

You remain the sole judge of what is right for your child. These activities are offered for educational and recreational purposes: they do not replace medical advice or the guidance of an early childhood professional.

Ways to adapt the activity

  • Easier: one pitcher and a wide bowl, harder to miss.
  • Harder: pouring up to a line marked on the glass, without going over.
  • Extension: watering the plants, or filling glasses at the table.
