What the activity builds
Strengthen the whole hand, understand that a sponge holds water and then releases it, and refine the precision of the motion.
The materials
- Two bowls, one filled a third full with water
- A small sponge, cut to fit their hand
- A towel
How to do it, step by step
- Dip the sponge in the bowl of water and let it soak up as much as it can.
- Lift it over the second bowl and squeeze with both hands.
- Repeat until the first bowl is empty, then switch directions.
- Wipe down the table together with the towel.
The parent's role
Show once, then step back, and let them get their sleeves wet. Water spilling over isn't a failure of the activity, it IS the activity.
Safety
Stay nearby around the water. Wipe the floor as you go to avoid slips.
