Zipper Practice
Pinching the zipper pull and tugging in one clean motion: a movement that opens coats and pencil cases.
Zipper Practice is a Montessori activity for a child aged 18 to 24 months. Area: Fine Motor. Time: 5-10 min.
What the activity builds
Practice the pincer grip and a straight pulling motion, on an everyday mechanism your child sees handled ten times a day. The pull only moves if the grip is right: the control of error is built into the zipper itself.
The materials
- A pencil case, a bag, or a dressing frame with a large, easy zipper
- A pull fitted with a ring or a big tab, easy to grab
- A small object hidden inside, to give a reason to open it
How to do it, step by step
- Set the closed pencil case in front of them, the object hidden inside.
- Pinch the pull between thumb and index finger, show it clearly, and pull slowly all the way.
- Open the case, take out the object, act surprised, then put everything away and zip it back up.
- Hand them the case: their turn to open it.
- Closing is harder than opening: that comes later, don't ask for it yet.
The parent's role
Show once, then step back. A sticky zipper kills interest in one second: check that it slides freely BEFORE presenting it, and rub it with a bit of candle wax if needed. Opening is plenty for this age, closing means lining up two pieces and tends to arrive around age three. The hidden object gives the motion its purpose.
Safety
Watch fingers and skin near the pull on clothes actually being worn: practice on a case set down, not on your child's own coat at first. Any hidden object should be too big to swallow.

Ways to adapt the activity
- Easier: the pull already partway along, they just finish the pull.
- Harder: opening then closing, holding the bottom of the zipper steady.
- Extension: opening their own coat when they get home.
