Drawing a Map of Their Room

Drawing a Map of Their Room is a Montessori activity for a child aged 6 to 8 years. Area: Science and Nature. Time: 20-30 min.
What the activity builds
Move from real space to a top-down representation of it, a first idea of what a map is.
The materials
- A large sheet of paper and a pencil
- A soft tape measure
- Their own room, with the real furniture in it
How to do it, step by step
- Stand on a stable chair, holding them, and look at the room from above.
- Trace the outline of the room together on the paper, as a single rectangle.
- Let them place their bed, seen from above, as a rectangle.
- Let them add the other furniture, without correcting the proportions.
- Compare the map and the room, standing in the middle, turning the paper to match.
The parent's role
Show once, then step back. Don't correct the proportions or the perspective: a bed drawn too big is normal and will sort itself out over time. What matters is moving from a 3D space to a flat map, and especially the motion of turning the paper to orient it like the room.
Safety
If you stand on a chair to look from above, it must be stable, and you need to hold your child, this is a classic accident moment. Avoid a metal tape measure, a cloth seamstress's tape is safer.

Ways to adapt the activity
- Easier: draw the map of just one table, with what's sitting on it.
- Harder: measure the furniture and roughly respect the proportions.
