The Word-Object Box
A label, an object: reading finally does something real.
The Word-Object Box is a Montessori activity for a child aged 6 to 8 years. Area: Language. Time: 20 min.
What the activity builds
Match a written word to the real object it names, by actually reading it.
The materials
- A box holding eight small familiar objects: a key, a spoon, an eraser, a cork
- Eight cardboard labels, each with an object's name written big
- A work mat
How to do it, step by step
- Take the objects out and line them up on the mat, well spaced apart.
- Pick up a label, read it silently to yourself, and set it in front of its object.
- Do a second label the same way, then step back.
- Let them place the six remaining ones, without commenting on their choices.
- Clean up together: every label and its object go back in the box.
The parent's role
Show once, then step back. Don't read the labels out loud for them: they need to decode it themselves, that's the whole point. The control of error is in the logic of the set: by the end there should be no leftover object without a word or word without an object.
Safety
The objects must be safe, with no point: no needle, no blade, no button battery. Check the box every time you use it. Remove small items if a younger sibling lives in the house.

Ways to adapt the activity
- Easier: four objects with very short, very different names.
- Harder: objects with similar sounding names.
- Extension: they write the labels themselves for a new set.
