Discovering Tens
Ten beads strung on a wire become a single object: that's what ten really is.
Discovering Tens is a Montessori activity for a child aged 4 to 6 years. Area: Early Math. Time: 15-20 min.
What the activity builds
See and hold a group of ten as a single quantity. Ten isn't just the word that comes after nine: it's a bundle, longer and heavier than one bead alone. Understanding this with the hands saves years of mechanical calculation on numerals that mean nothing later on.
The materials
- About a hundred identical beads and rigid wire or soft craft wire
- A small dish for loose beads
- Something to cut and neatly bend back the wire ends, adult hands only
How to do it, step by step
- Count ten beads together, one at a time, and string them onto the wire.
- Close the bundle and set it beside a single bead: the difference is easy to see.
- Say once: "one bead, one unit," then "ten beads, a ten."
- Your child builds the next bundles, recounting to ten each time.
- Line up the bundles: ten bundles side by side form a square, a hundred.
The parent's role
Let your child recount every bundle, even the tenth, even if you're sure it's right: that recounting is what fixes the idea in place. A bundle of nine beads stands out at a glance once set against the others, it's shorter. Don't count for them to speed things up, the activity loses all its point. Show once, then step back.
Safety
Beads too large to swallow, and wire ends bent back by the adult, never left sharp. Cut the wire out of your child's sight. Adult present from start to finish.

Ways to adapt the activity
