Color Sorting
Each bottle cap finds its family. The first real sorting work.
Color Sorting is a Montessori activity for a child aged 2 to 3 years. Area: Sensorial. Time: 10 min.
What the activity builds
Spot a shared trait, apply it all the way through, and check the work with a single glance.
The materials
- A dozen bottle caps or clothespins in three bold colors
- Three small bowls, one per color
- A tray
How to do it, step by step
- Mix the objects together in the center of the tray.
- Pick one up, look at it, and set it in the right bowl without talking.
- Do three of them, then hand over the rest.
- At the end, look at the three sorted families together.
The parent's role
Show once, then step back. If they get one wrong, don't correct it right away: once the sorting is done, the mistake often jumps out on its own and they fix it themselves. That's where the learning sticks.
Safety
Objects bigger than a quarter, with no sharp edges. Direct supervision if your child still mouths objects.
