Getting Tomorrow's Things Ready

Getting Tomorrow's Things Ready is a Montessori activity for a child aged 6 to 8 years. Area: Practical Life. Time: 15-20 min.
What the activity builds
Plan ahead for the day to come, and organize what's needed on their own, from a list.
The materials
- An illustrated checklist posted at their height, one line per category
- A fixed spot to set the ready things
- Their backpack and clothes within reach
How to do it, step by step
- Read the list together the first night, then post it up.
- Let them go down the list line by line and gather what it asks for.
- Check it with them by going back over the list, without adding anything yourself.
- Set everything in the agreed spot, always the same one.
- The next morning, don't touch a thing: they take what they got ready.
The parent's role
Show once, then step back. If they forget something, don't quietly cover for them. A forgotten item experienced once teaches more than ten reminders, and that's exactly the control of error in this activity. Give the school a heads up if needed, but let the consequence stand.
Safety
No material risk here. Just make sure it stays free of blame: it works only without comments on past forgetting, or it turns into a nightly punishment.

Ways to adapt the activity
