Why this material
A child recognizes a solid square long before recognizing a square drawn on a board. Between the two lies a path, and this material walks it in three steps: the surface, the thick outline, the thin line. At each step the shape loses substance and becomes a bit more of an idea. The control of error is in the stacking: the solid card covers its own outline edge to edge, and only its own.
