Pizza Fractions
A pizza cut in half, then in quarters: a half stops being a word and becomes a slice.
Pizza Fractions is a Montessori activity for a child aged 6 to 8 years. Area: Early Math. Time: 20 min.
What the activity builds
Handle the first fractions on a real round object, and compare a half to a quarter.
The materials
- Two identical round pizzas, or two cardboard discs
- A round-tipped knife, held by the adult for the real pizza
- Labels reading "a whole," "a half," "a quarter"
How to do it, step by step
- Set the two discs side by side and leave one whole, as a control.
- Cut the second one into two equal parts, in front of them, without commenting.
- Cut one of the halves in two, and line up the pieces under the whole disc.
- Let them place the labels in front of the matching pieces.
- Let them put the whole disc back together with the pieces.
The parent's role
Show once, then step back. The untouched disc is the control of error: your child can lay their pieces on top of it at any time and check they cover it exactly. Don't help them reach the conclusion, let them do the overlapping themselves.
Safety
The knife stays in the adult's hand, no exception, even a round-tipped one. If using a real pizza, check for allergies and wash hands. With cardboard, round the edges when cutting.

Ways to adapt the activity
