The Baking Soda Volcano
Baking soda, vinegar, and the mountain starts overflowing with foam.
The Baking Soda Volcano is a Montessori activity for a child aged 4 to 6 years. Area: Science and Nature. Time: 20 min.
What the activity builds
Trigger a reaction themselves, observe that a gas forms when two materials meet, and repeat it to check.
The materials
- A small glass or a glass yogurt jar, set in the middle of a large rimmed dish
- Two tablespoons of baking soda
- Half a cup of white vinegar
- A few drops of red food coloring, and dish soap for thicker foam
- Play dough or damp sand to shape the mountain around the glass
How to do it, step by step
- Build the mountain together around the glass, leaving the opening clear.
- Pour the baking soda into the glass, add the food coloring and a drop of dish soap.
- Both step back, and explain that you watch without leaning your face in.
- Pour in the vinegar all at once, then pull your hand away.
- Watch it overflow, without commenting, until the reaction is done.
- Rinse the glass and do it again: repeating it is how they'll understand the result is always the same.
The parent's role
Show once, then step back. The word "reaction" is fair game here, kids this age love it. That said, skip the chemistry lesson: what sticks with them is that two harmless things combined make a third one. The control of error is the foam itself, it won't rise if either ingredient is missing.
Safety
Vinegar stings the eyes badly: keep faces at a distance, and never lean over the glass. This isn't something to taste. Do it outside or on a surface that wipes clean, and wash hands afterward. Store the baking soda and vinegar out of reach as soon as you're done.

Ways to adapt the activity
- Easier: skip the mountain, just a glass set in the bottom of a dish.
- Harder: two volcanoes side by side, one with lots of baking soda, one with little, and they compare.
- Extension: put baking soda and vinegar in a bottle with a balloon over the opening, the gas blows it up.
